Funny how people's judgement works. Tristan (in Keith Lee Morris's The Dart League King) is charming, unique, insightful, brilliant, and cute. He steals Kelly's heart in sophomore English class though his passionate, deep reading of Shakespeare. Despite the inability to hear Tristan's reading, the reader can't help to be captivated by Tristan's depth. Up to meeting him, the characters all seemed so messed up and shallow--drug dealers and addicts, teenage mothers, and potential murderers. All self-absorbed morons. Then saunters in Tristan--quiet, yet deep. The third person omniscient allows for a window into his mind to see how he thinks. New, refreshing, brilliant. The only character with any potential.
Until he takes Liza Hatter to the lake.
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go read the book. Totally flips all your opinions of everything.
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And she never comes back.
So wrapped up in the unique, brilliant world of his own mind, Tristan watches, motionless, as Liza drowns in front of his eyes. Something poetic in her face and her final plea, "Tristan," paralyzes him as she bobs under the water for the last time. Devoid of any semblance of humanity after this event, he discards all emotions as he dumps her body into a hand dug grave.
Dang.
Suddenly our cocaine addicts, teen moms, undercover cops, and potential murderer seem more friendly.
And in fact they are.
